Opening up trading opportunities and connections between the Leeds and Sheffield creative timebanks has been a success for Leeds member Jonathan Turner. We are also looking at how we can transact hour credits to access venues, rehearsal spaces and equipment, in addition to our skills, knowledge and hands-on support.
The informal noncash economy of LCT is viewed with interest by researchers investigating ‘non-risky risk’ and creativity, time as an exchange currency and as an alternative and critique of the monetary mainstream. Recent publication of Design and Economics by Guy Julier includes LCT as an international casestudy.
Its planned for the autumn. This get-together happens twice a year and is member-led. It’s an opportunity to connect with others across a diverse range of artforms and disciplines, and help shape the timebank according to your interests.
The next Induction is June 17th 12-2pm. We hold regular inductions for new members where you can learn about its ethos and operation, get a sense of all the skills and knowledge that you can access and add to, and learn how to make transactions. Now with 180 members, your involvement will build the capacity of the network.
Members have earned time credits in a wide range of ways organising and attending the time bank socials and inductions.
This has included practical ‘doing’ tasks like earning credits for creating signs and decorations for events such as Sarah Spanton painting signs ( above), Magda Symanska and others photographing at events and Ivor Tymchak compering at events.
Management Team members and other members have earned credits for helping to run events in the lead up to or actually at the event.
Members also earn credits for attending inductions, sometimes for bringing home-made food or for taking part in activities such as DJ-ing or preparing presentations to talk about their projects ( such as the project we ran called The Gift).
Sue Ball and Sarah Spanton have offered training and helped a number of other places set up Creative Time Banks based on the model set up here in leeds. Here is the one they supported in North-East.
